With the Xbox and Playstation gaming consoles dominating the market, Nintendo has fallen behind and are no longer the super-power they once were. Although Nintendo is not nearly as popular as it once was, they are not giving up. Today, Nintendo announced they will be bringing back Nintendo World Championships (an intense gaming competition) after a 25 year drought.

Starting May 30th, competitors will be able to participate in select Best Buy locations around the United States. The winners in each region of the Best Buy qualifiers will then have the opportunity to join others that Nintendo has invited at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles, California on June 14th. At this time, we do not know what games competitors will be playing, but we would imagine (and hope)that there will be some epic Mario Kart show-downs. According to Nintendo’s website, we can expect to see more details regarding the Nintendo World Championship qualifying round in the coming weeks.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the Nintendo World Championships, don’t worry; some of you may not have been alive or were still in diapers in 1990 when the last Nintendo World Championship was held. At the time, the NES (Nintendo Entertainment System), was arguably one of the most popular gaming counsels in the United States. Nintendo decided to take advantage of its popularity and create a gaming showdown known as Nintendo World Championship. To compete, competitors had 6 minutes and 21 seconds to score as many points as they could playing Super Mario Brothers, Red Racer, and Tetris.

The winner in each age category (11 and under, 12-17, and 18 and over) received $10,000 U.S. savings bond, a new 1990 Geo Metro Convertible, a 40″ rear-projection TV, and a gold painted Mario trophy. Each Runner up received a $1,000 U.S. savings bond and a silver Mario trophy. We will have to keep our eyes out to see what the grand prize is for this year’s winner.

The Nintendo World Championship will kick off Nintendo’s participation in the E3 Event, where we will get our first look at the much-anticipated Mario Maker. This new Super Mario game lets you build your own Super Mario courses, and will bring back great memories of the original Super Mario Brothers.
